GLOBAL RISK

“Welcome, Ms. O’Neil,” Ghost comments smugly as former Global Risk Master Sergeant, Karen O’Neil, is led into his office at Black List headquarters. She is outfitted in a Black List uniform, except for her head, which is concealed beneath a large burlap hood. She is led into the room and seated at Ghost’s desk by Dragon and two accompanying Black List agents. “Remove her bindings and leave us.” Ghost commands the soldiers.

“Are you sure? She is armed and fully outfitted.” Dragon questions.

“Yes, it will be fine.” Ghost replies confidently. Dragon loosens O’Neil’s restraints and exits the room with the other Black List operatives, leaving Ghost and O’Neil alone.

“You may remove that ridiculous hood.”

O’Neil reaches up and removes the hood. A wave of cold, fresh air hits her face and she takes a few deep breaths. Her eyes slowly adjust to the new light, revealing a small bare room with a stainless steel desk and a lone window. The desk is covered with file folders, control panels, and wealth of communications devices. The back wall is lined with a multitude of LCD monitors, each displaying tactical information regarding the ongoing conflict between Black List and Global Risk. The center screen directly behind Ghost’s desk displays a world map of Black List’s current territorial control. The yellow and green shading over certain territories serve as reminder to O’Neil of her former failures under Global Risk.

From behind the desk, Ghost casually leans back in his chair. The orange lenses of his S.A.S. mask pierce O’Neil’s glare.

“So you are Ghost.” O”Neil squeaks out finally, interrupting an awkward silence.

“Yes, indeed. It’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance. I’ve been watching you closely for some time now, you know.”

“Is that so?”

“Oh yes, right back to your days as a mercenary. I must say, you’ve certainly come a long way. In particular, I find your recent change of attitude quite promising.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“You are lucky.”

“Why’s that?” Karen questions.

“Because new recruits never get a personal meeting with me.”

“Oh-“

“Yes, but I’ve developed a certain fondness of you, my dear. Also, the circumstances of your coming here today required we meet in person.”

“And why’s that?”

“It’s quite simple really. You wish to defect to our side, or at least claim to, and I must assess your willingness to adopt Black List procedures, your abilities, and your true intentions.”

“I assure you my intentions are noble.”

“Ah yes, but are they of benefit to me?”

“I’m not sure I follow you, sir. You said you are familiar with my previous experience and combat abilities. It is these services I offer to you today,” Karen replies matter-of-factly.

“I have no question of your ability. We are talking about your intentions.”

Karen sits quietly, staring at Ghost blankly.

“Let me ask you something.” Ghost begins, “Does it bother you that Global Risk has been met with utter failure in stopping us in recent months?”

“Yes. Our recent missions have been…less than successful.”

“And you don’t like to play for the losing team, I can understand that. But let me ask you this,” Ghost continues, “Does it not bother you to defect to the enemy? The same enemy that has caused you countless casualties, numerous setbacks, and very much spit in the face of everything you once believed and held dear?” The map screen behind Ghost now transitions between multiple ghastly images – the massacre in the Transport Ship, the Mutant outbreak, and the destruction of the former Black List base at Black Widow.

“No.” O’Neil replies quickly and sternly.

“Is that so?” Ghost replies coyly. He stands from his chair and begins to pace around the office. “Well, Karen, if I may call you that, I almost believe you. But the simple failure of a couple of missions is not any reason for someone to betray everything they have so long believed in and fought for, especially someone with your resolve. No, something truly tragic must happen for someone to stray this far.”

The LCD screen now flashes to footage of Global Risk Lieutenant Reinhardt strapped to a table in a laboratory setting. A man in a lab coat injects him with a long needle of neon-green formula. Reinhardt quickly begins to strain and convulse violently. His skin turns green and horns erupt from his shoulders before the tape loops, replaying his wicked transformation.

O’Neil springs from her chair and fixes her gun on Ghost. Her hand trembles and tears pour down her face.

“You monster! Where is he?”

“So these are your intentions!” Ghost replies gleefully. O’Neil cocks her gun, preparing to fire. “Not so fast, my dear. It seems we’ve reached an impasse.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you have something I want and I have something you want. Kill me and you’ll never find him.”

“What do you want?” O’Neil growls.

“The screen behind you depicts live footage of a break-in to one of my facilities, led, of course, by your former Global Risk Lieutenant General Steadman. They are attempting to steal information that is precious to me. If you could stop them and retrieve the stolen data, I might be willing to reveal the whereabouts of a certain mutant.”

“What do you want me to do?” O’Neil questions shakily.

“Prove your newfound allegiance to Black List. Kill Lieutenant General Steadman.”
